- Is Angophora Press a vanity publisher?
No, it isn't. We will not publish your book unless we see that there is a reasonable chance that it has a market sufficient to justify the investment (time and money, both yours and ours) in publishing and supporting it. We want to help you to create something that is not only of lasting value, but which also returns profit to you, the author and owner of the work.
- Is the print quality as good as offset printing?
No, but to most people, it's close enough. In fact, most people will not even notice the difference, although a professional in the book business will be able to see it instantly. Our printers are basically using very large laser printers, so if a laser printer is good enough for you then the printers we use will be too. If you are writing technical material and do not require photographic-quality reproduction, then we will be surprised if you are dissatisfied with print quality.
- What printers do you use?
In Australia, we currently use DocMaster in Brookvale NSW. We have found them good to work with and their pricing and print quality is competitive in the Australian market. Internationally, we use Lightning Source Inc. for on-demand printing, and Lulu.com for specific circumstances where it is warranted.
- Can I have color plates in my book?
You can, but the printing costs are significantly higher. Depending on whether you are interested in Australian-only distribution or international distribution, you may need to double or triple the retail price of your book. We recommend that you consider publishing your book with greyscale-only content. If you simply cannot publish your book with only a greyscale interior, then we will work with you to figure out your best option (even if it is not with us).
- How do I get my textbook into the University bookstore?
Just tell the textbook buyer at your University bookshop which class the book is required reading for. You will of course need to provide the details of the book: title, author, publisher, and ISBN. Internationally, the textbook buyer will be able to purchase books via Bowkers Books in Print. In Australia, the textbook buyer can place an order with Angophora Press directly.
- Will my book be listed on Amazon.com?
If you opt for international distribution with us, then yes, it will.
- What do you do to promote my book?
Officially, nothing. Since we are not a traditional publisher, we don't have the resources to spend up-front on promoting your book. We expect you to do that. (The other side of the coin, of course, is that your per-copy return is much higher.) We will, however, do a number of things to help you in your promotion efforts:
- Send evaluation copies to academics and libraries
- Help you with creating a promotional package
- Provide a homepage for your book on this site
- Help you with setting up online support for classes that use your book
- Anything else that is reasonable considering time and cost factors
- Can I publish internationally without publishing in Australia?
Yes, you can. This obviously makes sense if you are located outside of Australia. If you are located in Australia, bear in mind that the cost of postage will have to be factored in for distribution of books within Australia.
- Why do my Word files have to be converted into Quark Express?
Well, they don't have to be, but we really do recommend it. Word is not a type-setting program, and books produced directly from Word suffer for it (in our opinion).
- Can't I just do it all of this myself?
Yes, of course you can! Angophora Press offers a reasonable alternative that is different to self-publishing, short-run publishing, and traditional publishing. You are under no obligation to take it. Spend some time researching your options for publishing. If you choose our product, then of course we are delighted to have you on board. If you don't choose our product, then we would still welcome constructive feedback as to why.
